    Las misiones católicas jugaron un papel fundamental en la conformación de los Estados nacionales de América Latina. Los religiosos y religiosas emprendieron tareas vinculadas al control y colonización de los llamados «espacios vacíos» situados en los márgenes de las naciones y, también, a la «civilización» de los pueblos indígenas que vivían fuera del dominio estatal. En este trabajo nos queremos adentrar en las representaciones que los misioneros claretianos construyeron en el Chocó durante la primera mitad del siglo xx. El objetivo es rastrear la forma de mirar a los indígenas y, como a partir de estas miradas legitimaron su proyecto misional y forjaron su identidad como misioneros españoles en el Chocó. Para ello vamos a utilizar una película grabada por ellos, Amanecer en la selva. En ella, situaron a los nativos en un tiempo premoderno, como a «otros internos» ajenos a la contemporaneidad «civilizada», tiempo hacia donde los claretianos debían conducirlos a través de su proyecto misional.

    The Catholic missions played a fundamental role in the forming process of the national states of Latin America. Religious undertook tasks related to education, to the control and colonization of the so-called «empty spaces» located on the margins of the nations and also to the «civilization» and evangelization of the indigenous peoples living outside the state domain. In this paper we want to enter the world of the representations that the Claretian missionaries built in the Colombian Chocó during the first half of the twentieth century.

    The objective is to track the way in which the missionaries viewed the indigenous people, and how these views legitimized their missionary project and forged their identity as Spanish missionaries in the Chocó. For this purpose, we will use a film recorded by the religious, Amanecer en la selva. By means of celluloid, the missionaries placed the nativs in a pre-modern time, as «other inmates» alien to «civilized» contemporaneity, a time in which the Claretians had to lead the natives through their missionary project.
