The essay analyses Giulio Douhet’s theory of war, focusing in particular on the work Il dominio dell’aria (1932) and on the relationship between the form of war and the means by which it is fought. The thesis of the essay is that Douhet anticipated, albeit uncritically, many theoretical and political insights that would emerge with the twentiethcentury air wars. However, Douhet’s work is also highly problematic since numerous doctrinal assumptions contradict the fundamental lines of modern international law. For this reason, although reaching antithetical conclusions, Douhet’s work can be read as an anticipation of Carl Schmitt’s theory of the re- emergence of just war in the twentieth century.
