This system, grounded in West African traditions. is known, among other names, as rootmedi cine.Transforming West African cultural traditions and adopting to New World conditions, rootmedicine was developed as a response to thc need for social structure for cnslaved africans during the 18th and I 9th centmies. lt is a system that integrales West African culture and religion s, Native Ame1ican and European folk traditions, and Christian religious expression. Rootmedicine offers explanation for misfottune and illness and a means by wltich those who believe can gain control over forces affecting their lives.
