    Los maxtoles o maestros de coro son especialistas religiosos del pueblo chuj, cuya esfera de actividad se vincula particularmente con rituales funerarios. Este ensayo trata sobre ellos y el relevante poder religiososincrético que han construido durante siglos. Con tal fin se abordan algunas concepciones relativas a la muerte y las consideraciones que les merecen los difuntos a los dos pueblos chuj históricos: San Mateo Ixtatán y San Sebastián Coatán, municipio de Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

    Among the chuj people, the maxtoles or choir teachers are religious specialist whose activities are specially related to funerary rituals. This essay concerns the great syncretic-religious power that they had built through centuries. With this objective some conceptions about death and the consideration that deceased people deserved are reviewed in two historie chuj towns: San Mateo Ixtatán and San Sebastián Coatán
