    Las relaciones entre la polis de Esparta y el santuario de Apolo en Delfos eran ya una constante a mediados del siglo VI, momento en el que la primera emprendió una malograda guerra de conquista sobre el territorio de Arcadia. Este trabajo analiza, a través del testimonio de las fuentes antiguas y apoyándose en los estudios derivados de la historiografía moderna, cómo los lacedemonios se sirvieron de las sentencias oraculares emanadas de la pitia délfica para justificar su preeminencia política y militar sobre la península del Peloponeso y establecer el sistema de alianzas que, más que una demostración de fuerza e influencia, ponía de manifiesto la incapacidad de imponerse por completo a Argos en la carrera por la hegemonía y la necesidad de protección del estado espartano ante eventuales levantamientos de la masa hilota

    Relations between the polis of Sparta and the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi were already a constant in mid-6th century, at which time the Spartans undertook an unsuccessful war of conquest over the territory of Arcadia. This paper analyzes, through the testimony of ancient sources and the studies derived from modern historiography, how the Lacedaemonians used the oracular sentences emanating from the Pythia to justify their political and military preeminence over the Peloponnese peninsula and establish the system of alliances that, more than a show of strength and influence, exposed the inability to completely impose itself on Argos in the struggle for hegemony and the need to protect the Spartan state against possible uprisings of its helot mass
