Resumen de Libertad creativa versus autocensura en Francisco Salzillo (1707-1783): esculturas de ángeles niños

  Este artículo analiza las esculturas de los ángeles niños de Salzillo a partir de su biografía, religiosidad y lo expresado en la literatura artística y textos devocionales. Salzillo buscó la belleza y perfección formal asociadas al ser celestial. El desnudo infantil permitía una libertad que utilizó hasta llegar a los límites tolerados por la censura. Aunque se inspiró en modelos vivos, observando el decoro, alcanzó sus mayores logros expresivos cuando pudo observar a sus hijos, incluso con el recuerdo de los que habían muerto. Plasmó sentimientos y lágrimas en rostros, con manos reforzando el mensaje. Cuidó la policromía y subordinó la disposición de los ángeles niños a la figura principal. Se reflexiona sobre la función y cambios al representar esta experiencia visionaria, del gusto de la piedad popular y que conectaba emocionalmente con el devoto.

  This paper studies the sculptures of Salzillo’s child angels taking as a reference his biography, religiosity and the art literature and devotional writings. Salzillo seeked the beauty and formal perfection associated to celestial beings. Child nudity allowed a degree of artistic freedom that Salzillo took to its limits aware as he was of what censorship would consider acceptable. Although he got his inspiration from real children —always within the required limits of decorum— he achieved the highest levels of expression when he based his observations on his own children, even after he experienced the trauma of their deaths. They display deep emotions through tears, facial expression, using their hands and body disposition to reinforce the message. He carefully considered the polichromy of the child angels, while subordinating them to the main figure. We study the purpose and changes in the representations of these visions, so dear of popular piety and that created such a close emotional link with the faithful.
