  • The effects of including different sources of fiber in the diet on growth performance of weanling pigs under 2 different hygiene conditions (“clean barn” vs. “dirty barn”), was evaluated. There was a positive control diet based in corn, soybean meal, and fishmeal without any additional fiber source and 8 extra treatments that included 4 different sources of fiber at 2 levels of inclusion (2.5 and 5%). The experiment was conducted in a clean barn and then, without any cleaning, a new batch of piglets from the same origin was introduced in the barn. Data on growth performance was analyzed as a completely randomized design with source and level of fiber as main effects. In addition, the positive control diet was compared with the average of all other treatments that included additional fiber at each of the 2 hygiene conditions. For the entire experimental period, ADG and ADFI were higher (P < 0.05) for pigs placed in the clean than for pigs placed in the dirty barn. Source and level of inclusion of fiber did not affect growth performance. Post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) was lower (P < 0.001) in pigs reared in the clean than in the dirty environment (P < 0.001) and lower (P < 0.01) in pigs fed the control diet than in pigs fed the fiber containing diets. It is concluded that the inclusion of fiber in the diet increased PWD and did not improve growth performance. Also, piglets reared under high hygiene status showed improved growth and decrease PWD as compared with pigs reared under poor hygiene status.
