  • Resumen
    • The aim of the present study was to estimate the rate of edentulousness and the prosthodontic status among 565 institutionalized psychiatric patients in Spain. The men age of the patients was 58.0 and the mean length of hospitalization was 26.1 years, 61,4% were males and 38.6% were females. 76 (13.5%) people were totally edentulous. A significant increase in the rate of edentulousness with increased age was recorded. The mean number of remaining sound teeth decreased significantly with increased age and length of hospitalization. 6.5% (n=37) of the sample were wearing dentures, however, a total of 87.6% needed prosthodontic treatment. The investigation revealed that institutionalized psychiatric patients were in great need of dental care.
