Resumen de The role of motivation in tumor patients with osseointegrated prosthesis

Pedro Diz Dios, R. Wächter, Javier Fernández Feijoo, E. Vázquez García, FJ Álvarez Álvarez, Miguel Castro Ferreiro

  • Some studies have shown the aesthetic and functional advantages of implant-supported dentures in oncologic patients, although there are few references to the degree of satisfaction shown by the patients whom have received this type of treatment. A survey was carried out among twenty tumour patients, concerning the degree of well-being achieved after prosthetic rehabilitation. Results were compared with eighteen healthy subjects (control group) with implant-supported prosthesis. Although most of the tumour patients improved significantly in their chewing, speech and facial aesthetic, their results were not so satisfactory as those obtained in the control group. The mobility of the remaining soft tissues and the patient's motivation were observed to be two determining elements of implant-supported rehabilitation in oncologic patients.
