A total of 487 dromedaries from Egypt, Spain and Saudi Arabia were used for comparing the retention and readability of iron brands, plastic ear tags and different type of electronic boluses (low and high specific gravity) at mid-term and under different conditions. Only 38% branding marks were fully readable and 66-81% ear tags were retained. Bolus retention varied dramatically according to their specific gravity and materials >3 should be used for achieving high retention rates. Under practical conditions >99% retention can be obtained in dromedaries applying boluses of high specific gravity after 90 d or 90 kg BW.
