  • The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Portuguese Postcolonial Migratory System, called the Lusophone Migratory System, based on data collected in an empirical study on theconsumption of media and ICTs. Involving 14 in-depth interviews, this qualitative research is part of the Digital Inclusion and Participation project, which brought together the New University ofLisbon, the University of Oporto (Portugal) and the University of Austin/Texas (USA). We start by presenting some important aspects of the history of the Lusophone space within the PortugueseColonial Empire. This analysis is rooted in world-system economic and political theories. We also discuss geographical and mental mobility in late globalization, taking account of both human anddigital migration (GEORGIOU, 2006; KARIM, 2007; URRY, 2007). With those concepts as the basic underpinnings of the research, we outline the theoretical and empirical research and methodological procedures, while focusing on patterns of migration, social mobility and consumption of media and ICTs. Finally, we analyze the interviews and highlight the similarities and differencesbetween Brazilians and citizens of Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) in terms of daily consumption of ICTs, by country of origin, family ties and gender.
