Resumen de SteamPoe: los cuentos de Edgar Allan Poe bajo el prisma del Steampunk

  Mientras que Edgar Allan Poe estaba escribiendo sus historias góticas, el género del steampunk ni siquiera existía, por lo que este capítulo supone una buena oportunidad para hermanar a ambos. Sin embargo, ¿cómo puede ser esto posible si Poe falleció en 1849 y este subgénero de la ciencia ficción comenzó a emerger a finales del siglo pasado? Para responder a esta pregunta,algunas historias góticas escritas por Poe serán releídas en busca de características, elementos y/u otras referencias a la literatura steampunk que podrían explicar la relación existente entre ambos. Algunas de estas características son la atmósfera de determinados cuentos de Poe, con escenarios victorianos y de la Revolución Industrial, viajes que empleaban el vapor en el transporte, máquinas ficticias y autómatas, entre otros, que se pueden encontrar en historias como «The Fall of the House of Usher» y «MS. Found in a Bottle». Por lo tanto, aunque es cierto que el género del steampunk estuvo lejos de ser inventado en los tiempos de Poe,no se puede negar que se benefició de los poemas, ensayos y cuentos que Edgar A. Poe escribió en su corta vida.

  When Edgar Allan Poe was writing his gothic stories, thesteampunk genre did not even exist, so this paper represents a good opportunityto bring both of them together. However, how can this be possible if Poe passedaway in 1849 and this subgenre of science fiction started to emerge at the end ofthe last century? In order to answer to this question, some gothic stories writtenby Poe will be reread to find characteristics, elements and/or other references tothe steampunk literature that could explain the relationship between both ofthem. Some of these features are the atmosphere of some of Poe’s short tales, withVictorian scenarios and Industrial Revolution settings, trips by steam-poweredmeans of transportation, fictional machines and automata, among others, thatcan be found in stories such as «The Fall of the House of Usher» and «MS.Found in a Bottle». Thus, although it is true that the steampunk genre was faraway from invention in Poe’s times, it cannot be denied that it benefited fromthe poems, essays and tales that Edgar A. Poe penned in his short life.
