Les emprunts verbaux du français à l’anglais : une analyse sémantique

    This article investigates the semantics of French verbal anglicisms. The meaning of French verbs borrowed from English, like cheater, liker, zoomer, is compared to the meaning of the original verbs in the source language (cheat, like, zoom) and to the meaning of the potential competing native verbs (tricher, aimer). The analysis puts forward several important mechanisms in understanding the semantic aspects of borrowing in general, and of verbal borrowings in particular, like the reduction of polysemy, semantic specialization, metaphoric and metonymic extensions, and changes in argument structure. If a competing native verb exists when the borrowing takes place, one must question the utility of the verbal neologism. Semantic specificity and pragmatic markedness seem to be crucial in explaining the adoption of the new verb.

    Ce travail est consacré à la sémantique des anglicismes verbaux du français. Le sens de verbes français créés à partir d’un lexème anglais, comme cheater, liker, zoomer, est comparé au sens des verbes d’origine dans la langue source (cheat, like, zoom) et à celui des éventuels concurrents dans la langue cible lors de l’adoption du néologisme (tricher, aimer). L’analyse met en avant plusieurs mécanismes importants dans la compréhension des aspects sémantiques de l’emprunt en général et des emprunts verbaux en particulier, comme la réduction de la polysémie, la spécialisation sémantique, les extensions métaphoriques ou métonymiques et les changements de structure valencielle. Lorsqu’un terme concurrent existe dans la langue cible au moment de l’emprunt (cheater vs tricher), la question de l’utilité du néologisme verbal se pose. La spécificité sémantique paraît jouer un rôle crucial dans l’adoption du nouveau verbe, tout comme le marquage pragmatique.
