En este artículo se estudia un contrato inédito de Santo Tomé, con vigencia entre 1583 y 1589 . Se estudia la figura del contratador y la relación de este contrato con otros de sus negocios en África . El análisis del contrato arroja luz sobre el funcionamiento de la trata de esclavos hacia América desde dicha isla, así como sobre las diferentes mercancías que sus-tentaban dicho comercio . Las condiciones para el contratador y las obligaciones adquiridas para con la Corona constituyen elementos que permiten conocer mejor el desarrollo de la trata y entender los mecanismos que regulaban su puesta en práctica
In this article, we study an unpublished contract of São Tomé between 1583 and 1589, as well as the figure of the contractor and other of his African businesses . The analysis of the contract sheds light on the operation of the slave trade from the island to the Americas, as well as on the different merchandise that made possible that trade . The conditions of the contract and the obligations assumed by the contractor towards the Crown constitute key elements to understanding better the development of the slave trade and the mechanisms which regulated its put into practice
