    El ensayo parte de la tesis de que los orígenes de los estudios culturales hispá­nicos se remontan al siglo XVIII. Para justificarlo, se consideran diez factores: la historia de la palabra y del concepto ‘cultura’, la formación de un discurso identitario, la cultura como problema epistemológico y ético, la teoría del clima, la descripción de las costum­bres, el descubrimiento de las regiones, las dicotomías entre ciudad y campo, el norte y el sur, la cultura de masas y la cultura de élite y las políticas de la memoria.

    The essay starts from the thesis that the origins of Spanish cultural studies go back to the eighteenth century. To justify this, ten factors are considered: the history of the word ‘culture’, the formation of an identity discourse, culture as an epistemological and ethical problem, the theory of climate, the description of customs, the discovery of regions, the oppositions between city and countryside, north and south, mass culture and elite cul­ture, and the politics of memory.
