A divergent selection experiment for intramuscular fat content (IMF) in Longissimus dorsi muscle (LD) in rabbits was carried out during 6 generations. Direct and correlated responses in carcass weight, scapular and perirenal fat weight and IMF of LD, Bíceps femoris, Supraspinatus and Semimambranosus propius at 9 and 13 weeks of age were estimated as the differences between lines. Perirenal and scapular fat weights and IMF of all muscles increased with age. Response to selection for IMF was successful. The difference between high and low lines in IMF of LD at 9 weeks was 0.32g/100g, representing a 30.4% of the mean. A positive correlated response was shown in IMF of all studied muscles. Selection for IMF showed a positive correlated response with fat deposits.
