  El trastorno disfórico premenstrual es la recurrencia cíclica de cambios afectivos severos que llegan a incapacitar al 5% de las mujeres que se encuentran entre los 15 y los 49 años.

  Su causa todavía no se conoce con exactitud pero se sospecha que se debe a una alteración producida por los efectos de la progesterona y estrógenos.

  Por el momento, el diagnóstico se realiza siguiendo los criterios que establece el Manual diagnóstico y estadístico de los trastornos mentales y las opciones de tratamiento van desde el uso de antidepresivos hasta la extirpación del útero, ovarios y trompas de Falopio.

  Ante la insuficiente existencia de evidencia, se debe continuar investigando sobre este tema para obtener más conocimientos y poder ofrecer tratamientos más adecuados a las mujeres que lo padecen.

  Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is the cyclical recurrence of severe affective changes that disables up to 5% of women between the ages of 15 and 49.

  Its cause is not yet known exactly, but it is suspected to be due to an alteration produced by the effects of progesterone and oestrogens.

  At the moment, the diagnosis is made according to the criteria established by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and treatment options range from the use of antidepressants to the removal of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

  Given the insufficient evidence, further research is needed to gain more knowledge and to be able to offer more appropriate treatments to women suffering from it.
