O Diabo Coxo e a fundação da imprensa ilustrada em São Paulo

    Neste artigo, buscamos descrever a formação da imprensa no Brasil Oitocentista e, especificamente, observar o impacto das pautas jornalísticas a partir do uso de imagens. A Impressão Régia, criada em 1808 no Brasil Colônia, marcou o início da imprensa e da circulação de periódicos na América Portuguesa. Após a emancipação, na década de 1830, o aumento do número de leitores, a diversificação da temática discutida nos periódicos e a modernização das técnicas de impressão permitiram o surgimento da imprensa ilustrada, obra caracterizada pela incorporação de imagens em seus números, decorrente da combinação do método tipográfico e litográfico. Em São Paulo, Angelo Agostini fundou o Diabo Coxo em 1864, juntamente com Luiz Gama, revista considerada a primeira publicação ilustrada da província. Dessa forma, as caricaturas difundidas assinalaram a nova forma de narrar os fatos significativos em uma sociedade majoritariamente analfabeta.

    In this article, we seek to describe the formation of the press in Brazil in the 19th century and, specifically, to observe the impact of journalistic guidelines from the use of images. The Royal Printing, created in 1808 in Brasil Colônia, marked the beginning of the press and the circulation of periodicals in Portuguese America. After the emancipation, in the 1830s, the increase in the number of readers, the diversification of the topics discussed in the periodicals and the modernization of printing techniques allowed the emergence of the illustrated press, a work characterized by the incorporation of images in their numbers, due to the combination of the typographic method and lithographic. In São Paulo, Angelo Agostini founded the Diabo Coxo in 1864, along with Luiz Gama, magazine considered the first illustrated publication of the province. In this way, the widespread cartoons marked the new way of narrating the significant facts in a society mostly illiterate.
