Resumen de E agora Reagan? O caso Irã-contras nas páginas da revista Veja (1986-1987)

In 1986 an international political scandal would undermine the credibility of the Ronald Reagan administration in the United States. These were the secret arms negotiation with members of the Iranian government and the diversion of money from the sale of arms to finance the actions of the paramilitary group of Nicaragua, the contras. The event was compared to the Watergate case in 1972 under Richard Nixon, when Nixon resigned shortly thereafter. The developments in this episode of the recent political history of the United States have been reported worldwide, and we propose in this article the analysis of the facts reported by the weekly magazine Veja, which accompanied the unfolding of the investigation process about the historical phenomena already mentioned. In light of the editorial and ideological profile of the weekly, we aimed to analyze how the newspaper reported in Brazil the tense political moment in the United States.

Em 1986 um escândalo político internacional abalaria a dita credibilidade do governo Ronald Reagan nos Estados Unidos. Tratava-se da negociação secreta de armas com membros do governo do Irã e o desvio de dinheiro, obtido com a venda das armas, para financiamento das ações do grupo paramilitar da Nicarágua, os contras. O evento foi comparado ao caso Watergate em 1953, no governo de Richard Nixon, quando na ocasião houve a renuncia de Nixon ao cargo de presidente pouco tempo depois. Os desdobramentos deste episódio da recente história política dos Estados Unidos foram noticiados no mundo inteiro, e, propomos neste artigo, a análise dos fatos reportados pela revista semanal Veja, que acompanhou os desdobramentos do processo de investigação acerca dos fenômenos históricos já referidos. A luz do perfil editorial e ideológico do semanário, objetivamos analisar como o periódico noticiou no Brasil o tenso momento político estadunidense.
