Resumen de Novos dados do sítio pesqueiro romano da Boca do Rio

  Since its discovery in the late nineteenth century, the Roman site of Boca do Rio has been assumed– regarding its ruins at the sea-front -well investigated. However, most of the preserved parts of the site, belong to the productive area of salt-fish processing, extend behind theseafront, where the residential or pars urbana area of this villa maritima was located. Very little is known of this productive area, which alwaysappeared to consist of well preserved structures of cetariae and other structures of salted-fish production.One of the main purposes of the project “Boca do Rio: a fishing site between two seas” is to study this area of about two hectares, namelythrough geophysical surveys and punctual trenches to confirm the nature of the structures detected. During the year 2017, the geophysicalmeasurements allowed to detect imposing structures of the industrial area of Boca do Rio. Punctual trenches showed the structures werevery well preserved. A summary of the data obtained is presented, setting the Boca do Rio as one of the largest salted-fish processing sites insouthern Lusitania.

  Desde os finais do século XIX que o sítio romano da Boca do Rio tem sido amplamente referenciado, nomeadamente no que diz respeitoàs ruínas da frente marítima, as mais investigadas desde então. Todavia, a maior parte do sítio que se preserva, correspondente à áreaprodutiva de transformação de preparados de peixe, estende-se para trás da frente marítima, onde se situou a área residencial ou pars urbanadesta villa marítima. Dessa área produtiva pouco se conhece, ainda que sempre aparentou apresentar estruturas de cetárias e de outros equipamentosmuito bem preservados sob as dunas.Um dos objetivos do projeto “Boca do Rio: um sítio pesqueiro entre dois mares” é estudar esta área com cerca de dois hectares, nomeadamenteatravés de prospeções geofísicas não-invasivas e de sondagens pontuais para confirmar a natureza das estruturas identificadas. Duranteo ano de 2017, as prospeções geofísicas realizadas permitiram detetar imponentes estruturas da área industrial da Boca do Rio que sondagensde confirmação posteriores demonstraram estarem em perfeito estado de conservação, apresentando-se hoje como um dos maiores sítios detransformação de preparados piscícolas do sul da Lusitânia.
