    El hepatocarcinoma o carcinoma hepatocelular es un tumor de alta prevalencia a nivel mundial y cuando se encuentra en un estadio avanzado, son pocos los tratamientos sistémicos disponibles para mejorar la supervivencia de estos pacientes. Sin embargo, el mayor conocimiento del microambiente tumoral y el papel del sistema inmune en el control de la progresión del tumor ha permitido desarrollar tratamientos dirigidos contra los puntos de control inmunológico o immune checkpoints, que permiten conseguir tasas de respuesta tumoral notables y supervivencias prolongadas. Aunque la mayor parte de estos tratamientos son bien tolerados, hasta un 20 % de los pacientes puede experimentar efectos secundarios derivados de estimulación no específica del sistema inmune. Por ello, la investigación continuada en el uso de estas nuevas terapias nos permitirá conocer mejor el perfil de pacientes que más se beneficiarán de las mismas.

    Hepatocellular carcinoma is a highly prevalent tumor worldwide and when it reaches an advanced stage, few sys - temic treatments are available to improve the survival of these patients. However, the greater knowledge about the tumor microenvironment and the role of the immune system in the control of tumor progression has allowed the devel - opment of treatments targeting immune check-points, which result in encouraging tumor response rates and prolonged overall patient survival. Although most of these treatments are well tolerated, up to 20 % of patients may experience side effects derived from non-specific stimulation of the im- mune system. Therefore, continuous investigation on the use of these new therapies will allow us to better understand the profile of patients who will benefit most from them.
