La imagen médica desempeña un papel fundamental en el cribado, diagnóstico, estadificación, tratamiento y evaluación de la respuesta del hepatocarcinoma (HC) a las terapias. La ecografía es la técnica de elección para el cribado en pacientes con riesgo elevado de desarrollar HC. Es el único cáncer cuyo diagnóstico se puede realizar mediante tomografía computarizada (TC) o resonancia magnética (RM) dinámicas en pacientes con cirrosis, sin necesidad de confirmación histológica. La TC y la RM dinámicas también permiten la estadificación de la enfermedad neoplásica, la evaluación de la respuesta a cualquier tratamiento y el seguimiento para detección de recurrencias. La TC y la ecografía son además de gran utilidad para guiar biopsias y procedimientos terapéuticos por vía percutánea o transcatéter cada vez más precisos.

Medical imaging plays a fundamental role in the screen - ing, diagnosis, staging, treatment and evaluation of the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) response to therapies. Ul - trasound is the technique of choice for screening patients at high risk of developing HCC. It is the only cancer that can be diagnosed by dynamic computed tomography (CT) or mag - netic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cirrhosis, without the need for histological confirmation. Dynamic CT and MRI also allow staging of neoplastic disease, evaluation of the response to any treatment, and follow-up for detection of recurrences. CT and ultrasound are also very useful for guiding biopsies and percutaneous or transcatheter thera - peutic procedures that are increasingly precise.
