R. Gutiérrez Peña, Yolanda Mena Guerrero, Juan Manuel Micheo Puig, S. García

  • Small ruminant production has a great importance from an environmental and a social perspective. However, its viability and continuity is compromised by fluctuations of the price of inputs and milk. Therefore, it is necessary to develop techniques to measure different data in the farm in order to increase the profit of the production and optimize the use of inputs. 12 farms of goat (Malagueña breed) were studied; different technical and economic indicators were measured. Farms were ranked from highest to lowest profit per goat and year (BE), in order to obtain suitable management guidelines of the set of farms that constitute the livestock associations. According to the results, the key factor to obtain a positive BE is the optimization of the labor. Also, is crucial obtain a high milk production with an optimization of the inputs applied. That is: adjust the feed to the real necessities of each goat and balance the supply of fodder and concentrate. It is remarkable the importance of the food self-sufficiency in order to improve the profitability of the farm. Likewise, it is necessary to produce quality products, with a high social and environmental value, in order to obtain a higher mark-up of the milk.
