The thesis presented in this article is that the peripheral adverbial occurrences known as ‘enunciation adverbs’ are in fact independent, syntactically elliptical statements (= reduced to an adverb which implies as a rector an absent verbum dicendi). The content of these statements is the description of a known adjacent or presupposed utterance, hence their function as meta-enunciative comments.

La thèse soutenue dans cet article est que les occurrences adverbiales périphériques dites ‘adverbes d’énonciation’ sont en fait des énoncés indépendants, syntaxiquement elliptiques (= réduits à un adverbe qui implique à titre de recteur un verbum dicendi absent). Ces énoncés ont pour contenu la description d’une énonciation adjacente ou présupposée connue, d’où leur fonction de commentaires métaénonciatifs.
