El sistema ferroviario español se vio afectado por la Primera Guerra Mundial. La propia economía española sufrió sus efectos. Muchos sectores dispusieron de oportunidades inexistentes en condiciones de paz y, en ese sentido, algunos de ellos permanecieron sobredimensionados. Estas circunstancias alteraron absolutamente la demanda del transporte ferroviario y afectaron también a un sector muy regulado y sin flexibilidad para adaptarse a las nuevas condiciones. Se intenta evaluar lo que supuso la Gran Guerra para las empresas ferroviarias y para sus relaciones con el Estado.

The Spanish Railway systems during the World War I were affected by this conflict. The Spanish economy itself suffered these derived effects; for instance, many sectors had opportunities that could not exist in other conditions of peace and, in this respect, some of them were oversized. These circumstances altered absolutely the rail transport demand and also affected a highly regulated sector with no flexibility to adapt to new conditions. In this regard, we should attempt to evaluate what the Great War meant for railway companies and for their relationships with the State.
