Introduction:Dementia affects between 40 and 50 million people worldwide and is characterized by the involvement of several brain functions, and is one of the main responsible for generatingdisabilities in the elderly. There is some not so clear evidence that nutritional factor would be associated with dementia. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional profile, the occurrence of dementia and factors associated in the elderly attended at a referral center for the health of the elderly in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through the analysis of 370 medical records of patients treated at a center of reference to the health of the elderly. To determine nutritional status was used the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MAN) and the CDR scale was used to classify dementia. Results: The only variables that showed a statistically significant association whit dementia were age and schooling. The chances of dementia were higher among the very old (RC=2,200; IC=1,205-4,018) and old old (RC=1,709; IC=1,028-2,841) when compared to the young old and illiterate elderly (RC=2,538; IC=1,621-3,974) when compared to the literate elderly. Conclusion: The age and the schooling should be considered in the investigation and prevention of the dementia. There wasn’t statistically significant association between dementia and nutritional statement assessment by MAN.
