Resumen de Desagravios de Cristo en el aposentillo: aromas, cantos y pintura novohispana

En la Nueva España del siglo XVIII, el sentido del olfato fue tan importante como la vista para comprender el contenido de algunas pinturas, entre ellas las imágenes que representan a Cristo en el aposentillo. Este artículo propone una nueva lectura de las obras anónimas sobre ese tema que resalta la importancia de los olores para su interpretación. El contraste entre hedores y fragancias que se vinculaban a la pintura ocurría en el marco del ritual del aposentillo; éste era una práctica devocional colectiva que prescribía ofrendas aromáticas y cantos dirigidos a Cristo para desagraviarle. El propósito de este ejercicio piadoso, cuidadosamente descrito en un librito devocional de Nicolás de Espíndola intitulado Desagravios de Jesús, consistía en crear una experiencia didáctica olfativa, la cual permitía a los devotos aprender, por un lado, los significados simbólicos de la imagen al relacionarlos con diversos aromas; por otro lado, encarnar y asimilar el concepto teológico de la reparación. Ambas condiciones eran necesarias para que los creyentes se vinculasen emocionalmente con la imagen pintada, fortaleciesen su relación con lo divino y reafirmasen su pertenencia a una comunidad religiosa.

In eighteenth-century New Spain, the sense of smell was as relevant as sight to understand the meaning of some paintings, including the anonymous images representing Christ in prison. This paper offers a new reading of those canvases, which focuses on the importance of aromas for interpreting the images. The contrast between fragrances and odors that were meant to be associated with the paintings occurred within the framework of the ritual of the aposentillo; this was a collective devotional practice that prescribed fragrant offerings and songs to make amends with Christ. This pious practice, which Nicolás de Espíndola carefully described in a devotional booklet titled Desagravios de Jesús, aimed to create an olfactory didactical experience. On the one hand, such experience allowed the devotees to learn the symbolic meanings of the image by associating them with various aromas. On the other hand, it allowed them to embody and embrace the theological concept of reparation; both circumstances were required for the believers to achieve three goals: to link emotionally with the paintings, strengthen their relationship with the divinity, and reinforce their belonging to a religious community
