    Este artículo se pregunta sobre las relaciones entre los grandes comerciantes y el Cabildo de Cartagena durante los años comprendidos entre 1750 y 1810, cuestión pertinente en la medida en que el análisis de la información de archivos permite reconocer que fue a partir del último cuarto del siglo XVIII cuando aquellos mostraron un creciente deseo de controlar esa institución y se esforzaron en crear el Consulado de Comercio para defender sus intereses. Ese interés tenía como propósito aprovechar de mejor forma las oportunidades económicas que empezó a ofrecer la ciudad a partir del mayor número de habitantes; fortalecimiento de la economía local gracias a la inversión realizada en los sistemas defensivos de ciudad, y a que las políticas comerciales de la Corona mejoraron las oportunidades para el tráfico mercantil.

    This article analyzes the relation between the big merchants and the Cabildo of Cartagena during the years between 1750 and 1810. To answer this question we took into account the analysis of the archival information that allowed us to recognize that it was based on last quarter of the 18th century when merchants showed a growing interest in controlling the Cabildo and in creating institutions of power (Consulate of Commerce) to defend their interests and take better advantage of the economic opportunities that the city began to offer (growth in the number of inhabitants; strengthening of the economy, thanks to the money invested in the defensive systems of the city, since the commercial policies of the crown improved the opportunities for commercial traffic).
