Gigantes y demonios en el siglo XVI: de las «flores curiosas» de Torquemada a la demonología de Martín Del Río

    La existencia de criaturas sobrenaturales ocupó diferentes discursos aparentemente dispares a lo largo del siglo XVI y en adelante. Por un lado, la literatura de prodigios y de mirabilia se desarrolló como género e influyó otras producciones textuales. Por otro lado, desde finales del siglo XV tenía lugar el florecimiento de los llamados tratados demonológicos, que analizaban las cuestiones “sobrenaturales” en una nueva clave, la de la crítica y el ataque a lo supersticioso. En el presente trabajo examinamos cómo las digresiones sobre un tipo de criaturas sobrenaturales, los gigantes, ocuparon espacios discursivos en la literatura de prodigios y también en la tratadística antisupersticiosa, y cómo en el debate en torno a su existencia intervinieron varios factores como el folclórico, literario y el teológico.

    The existence of supernatural creatures was a central feature form the 15th century onwards in a variety of narratives apparently diverse. On one hand, the literature of prodigies and mirabilia constituted as a genre had influence in other literary productions. On the other hand, by the end of the 15th century the so-called demonological treatises that examined the supernatural matters critically increased in number and diffusion. In the present contribution, we analyze how the digressions on giants occupied the narratives in the literature of prodigies as well as in the anti-superstitious treatises. We also examine the impact of aspects such as theology, folklore, archeology and literature in the reception and creation of narratives about giants.
