    A limestone relief-decorated block from the Memphite tomb of Ptahmes, mayor of Memphis and chief steward in the temple of Ramses II in the house of Ptah in Memphis, was offered by Giuseppe Nizzoli, Chancellor of the Austrian Consulate in Egypt from 1818 to 1828, to Luigi Simone Peruzzi, Chamberlain of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II, on the occasion of his stay in Egypt and the Levant from August 1824 to December 1825. Nizzoli’s aim was to convince Leopold II to buy also his third collection of Egyptian antiquities availing intermediation of Peruzzi. The negotiation failed and the collection was acquired by the Bolognese painter Pelagio Palagi in 1831, but it is interesting to bring to light the unpublished documents that reveal the provenance of the Ptahmes relief kept in Florence and the unknown plots of an affair that also involved the Franco-Tuscan Expedition in Egypt

    Una lastra in calcare decorata a rilievo dalla tomba menfita di Ptahmes, sindaco di Menfi e maggiordomo nel tempio di Ramses II nel dominio di Ptah a Menfi, fu offerto da Giuseppe Nizzoli, cancelliere presso il consolato austriaco in Egitto dal 1818 al 1828, a Luigi Simone Peruzzi, iambellano del granduca di Toscana Leopoldo II, in occasione di un suo soggiorno in Egitto e Levante dall’agosto 1824 al dicembre 1825. L’obiettivo di Nizzoli era quello di convincere Leopoldo II a comperare anche la sua terza collezione di antichità egiziane, avvalendosi della mediazione di Peruzzi. La trattativa fallì e la collezione fu acquistata dal pittore bolognese Pelagio Palagi nel 1831, ma è interessante rendere noti i documenti inediti che documentano la provenienza del rilievo di Ptahmes conservato a Firenze e le trame nascoste di un affare che coinvolse anche la Spedizione letteraria franco-toscana in Egitto.
