FEM analysis of stress propagation in trabecular structure for lightweight applications

    • In this study, a three-dimensional trabecular structure is constructed with the help of micro-computed tomography scan data of a rat distal femur, and the finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out to analyze the stress distribution. Compressive loads 1000N, 2000N, and 4000N were applied in longitudinal and transverse directions. The FEA showed that the percentage increase of stress in the transverse direction is 22% compared to that in the longitudinal direction. An analytical analysis was conducted on a small section to validate the results and the estimated error is 7.16% between the analytical and finite element simulation results.
