Script fading is a procedure used in Applied Behavior Analysis and which may improve communication in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Scripts may be pictures, textual or audible stimuli and, under their control, learners may build sentences to communicate, and scripts must be faded out gradually through the removal of the components. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of script fading on the emission of sentences with a tact function in four children with ASD. Groups of pictures were established. For two children (P1 and P2), textual scripts were used for reading and, for the two remaining (P3 and P4), the scripts were dictated for the emission of echoics. Criteria were established for the gradual fading of scripts and establishment of responding solely under the presence of pictures. The procedure was effective for all children, because they emitted sentences with tact function without the need for scripts and it was, also, efficient for three, because learning was faster after training with the first group of pictures. Maintenance of correct performance was demonstrated one month later. Although the current research successfully established change in stimulus control from the scripts to the pictures, the responses of the participants were always based on scripts and they never varied. For each picture, only one script was used, which may explain the lack of variability and this represented a methodological limitation of the research. Previous studies on script fading manipulated multiple scripts to produce response variability in participants with ASD. Future studies that investigate effects of script fading on tacting with sentences could manipulate multiple scripts to assess response variability.
