  Esta investigación se efectuó con la finalidad de conocer los antecedentes de la moneda electrónica a nivel mundial, la forma es que es empleada en otros países, y su funcionamiento en el ámbito del Ecuador, para esto se estableció la estructura teórica que permitió identificar las diferentes divisas de este tipo creadas para realizar transacciones comerciales mediante el uso de diversas plataformas que pueden ser online u offline; de igual manera se pudo establecer mediante la aplicación de la encuesta a la población el nivel de preparación que existe para la adopción de esta moneda electrónica en el sistema financiero ecuatoriano, determinando que la mayoría de la población concibe un gran nivel de incertidumbre y desconfianza con respecto a su uso, por otra parte la plataforma para poder emplear el dinero electrónico aunque es de fácil acceso, el nivel cultura de la población no permite que se tenga la confianza necesaria para el uso de esta divisa.PALABRAS CLAVE: Moneda electrónica; finanzas públicas; Banco Central; divisas.
