    El ensayo aborda varios asuntos relacionados con la biografía y la producción artística de Gregorio Vásquez, el más importante pintor neogranadino activo en Santafé en la última parte del siglo XVII y la primera década del siglo XVIII. Vásquez es una figura única en la historiografía artística latinoamericana porque historiadores locales se dieron a la tarea de investigar y escribir sobre su vida y obra desde por lo menos el siglo XIX. Su vasta producción incluye casi quinientas pinturas y un corpus único de más de cien dibujos. A través de fuentes primarias publicadas e inéditas, crónicas contemporáneas y el análisis de su estilo pictórico y técnicas de dibujo, se argumenta que la gran producción artística y la fama del pintor fueron al mismo tiempo medio y resultado de una estrategia desarrollada por el mismo Vásquez y posteriormente sus seguidores en el siglo XVIII para aprovechar del éxito del pintor a nivel regional.

    The article addresses related issues surrounding the artistic biography and production of Gregorio Vásquez, the most important painter of colonial Colombia, active in the latter part of the seventeenth and the first decade of the eighteenth century. Vásquez is a unique figure in Latin American art historiography because local historians researched and wrote about his life and works since at least the nineteenth century. His vast catalogue consists of almost five hundred paintings and includes a unique corpus of over a hundred drawings. Based on published and unpublished primary sources and chronicles, and the analysis of his painterly style and drawing techniques, it is argued that the painter’s abundant production and fame were both the means and result of artistic strategies devised by Vásquez and his followers throughout the eighteenth century in order to capitalize on the painter’s regional success.
