El «Flandes separado», de remedio pacificador a enfermedad de la Monarquía de Felipe III: Terapias sanadoras a comienzos del reinado (1598-1605)

    Entre los siglos XVI y XVII, la imagen anatómica de la Monarquía Hispánica, vista como cuerpo formado por miembros capaces de enfermar y de contagiar su enfermedad a los demás, ganó peso específico en el campo de la política práctica. Este artículo demuestra que sirvió para formular máximas de acción, pero también para justificar acciones ya ejecutadas o susceptibles de ser ejecutadas. En el caso de los estados de Flandes, las analogías patológicas y terapéuticas presentes en la teoría política del momento se emplearon para justificar por qué fueron separados del patrimonio hereditario de Felipe III y también para proporcionar viabilidad a su existencia separada. Durante los primeros años del reinado, se trató de no revertir la separación mediante tratamientos curativos que se explican y contextualizan en las siguientes páginas a través del cruce de fuentes.

    The anatomical image of the Spanish Monarchy as a body made up of members capable of getting sick and spreading their disease to the others, gained importance in the field of practical politics between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This article shows that it not only served to formulate maxims of action, but also to justify actions already —or likely to be— implemented. In the case of the States of Flanders, the pathological and therapeutic analogies presented in the political theory of the moment were used to justify why they were separated from the heritage of Philip III, and also to provide viability for their seceded existence. During the early years of his reign, he tried not to reverse the secession by resorting to curative treatments that are explained and contextualized below by crossing sources.
