La sentencia Bank Melli Iran constituye la primera interpretación del Estatuto de bloqueo de la Unión Europea por el TJUE. Este asunto pone de manifiesto la necesidad de un instrumento jurídico para hacer frente a las sanciones con efectos extraterritoriales adoptadas por terceros países, subrayando así la importancia de la autonomía estratégica de la Unión Europea. La sentencia también demuestra, sin embargo, que el instrumento actualmente en vigor presenta diversos problemas jurídicos. La reforma del Estatuto de bloqueo es, por lo tanto, urgente.

The Bank Melli Iran judgment constitutes the first interpretation by the CJEU of the EU Blocking Statute. This case underlines the need for a legal instrument to protect the EU from extraterritorial sanctions adopted by third States, thus highlighting the importance of the EU strategic autonomy. Yet, the judgment also reveals that the current instrument has several legal problems. The reform of the EU Blocking Statute is therefore urgent.
