In this chapter, issues caused by the absence of direct informants (i.e.speakers) for the study of an ancient language (Egyptian) will be discussed, as well as how to ease the lack of information with “indirect” informants (i.e. texts). In particular, the focus will be set on two spheres rich in information, graphemics and textual variability, and methods to exploit them.
