Este artículo pretende estandarizar los procedimientos a realizar por parte del profesional de enfermería correspondiente, en la inserción, mantenimiento y retirada de un catéter venoso periférico, e incorporar la mejor evidencia científica existente en el momento actual.
La prioridad y base de la atención sanitaria, es la seguridad del paciente y la seguridad de los profesionales sanitarios. En esta misma dirección, encontramos que una técnica adecuada en la inserción de una vía venosa periférica, evitar posibles complicaciones y disminuir costes derivados de la hospitalización, favorecen dicha seguridad.
La cateterización venosa se ha generalizado en la medicina hospitalaria actual de tal forma, que la mayoría de los pacientes que acuden a un hospital para ser atendidos reciben, como mínimo, la colocación de una vía periférica, aunque ésta sea transitoria.

This article aims to standardize the procedures to be performed by the corresponding nursing professional, in the insertion, maintenance and removal of a peripheral venous catheter, and to incorporate the best scientific evidence existing at the present time.
The priority and basis of health care is the safety of the patient and the safety of the health professionals. In this same direction, we find that an adequate technique in the insertion of a peripheral venous line, the avoidance of possible complications and the reduction of costs derived from hospitalization, favor such safety.
Venous catheterization has become so widespread in today’s hospital medicine that most patients who come to a hospital for treatment receive, at least, a venipuncture or, in most cases, the placement of a peripheral line, even if this is only temporary.
