  • Despite sugar cane’s industry arrived in Spain during the tenth century, it was not until the XIV- XV century that it bloomed in Malaga, only to start its decay two centuries later. For almost 2-3 centuries, sugar cane’s mills led the economy of this area. Its commerce and exportation were for long one of the driving forces of the economic activity in the Eastern coast of Andalusia. However, a new urbanized territory came forth to give response to the increasing demand of touristic accommodation and second residences mostly exploited by seasons.These industrial architecture and machinery were a significant part of our past and deserve to be adequately preserved. Tourism was one of the reasons why they became unattended, but it can also be the reason to revive them. Digital reconstruction has been used in several museums and cultural centers to rebuild ancient architectures in order not to lose their legacy perpetually. Today, multiple technologies allow us to discover heritage from another perspective such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). This paper explores the possibilities offered by these techniques regarding cultural tourism as the main resource for preserving and exploiting such evidences of Malaga’s sugar cane’s industrial past.
