La presidencia de Donald Trump ha desconcertado por igual aamigos y enemigos, al tiempo que renunciaba a las que habíansido las líneas maestras de la política norteamericana desde1945 sin sustituirla por otra, provocando desconfianza en elmundo. Si a eso se añaden los problemas internos de crecientesdesigualdades, racismo y mal manejo de la pandemia, no esde extrañar que el prestigio internacional de los EE. UU. hayasufrido y con él el de la democracia de la que Washington espaladín en el mundo.Joe Biden intenta revertir esta situación regresando a la políticatradicional. Sabe que EE. UU. necesitan un orden internacionalque deben acordar con sus aliados y que luego deben defenderjuntos. Para ello debe restablecer la buena relación con Europa yluego definir una política clara con relación a China y a Rusia, conlos que actualmente tenemos contenciosos particularmente peligrosos en Taiwan y Ucrania. Pero se encuentran con que China yRusia tienen otras ideas y ofrecen un modelo alternativo y autoritario de gobernanza global que tiene atractivo para muchospaíses.

If we add to that the internal problems of growing inequalities, racism and mismanagement of thepandemic, it is not surprising that the international prestige ofthe United States has suffered and with it that of the democracythat Washington is a champion of in the world.Joe Biden tries to reverse this situation by returning to traditionalpolitics. He knows that the United States needs an internationalorder that it must agree with its allies and then defend together.To this end, it must restore good relations with Europe and thendefine a clear policy with regard to China and Russia, with whomwe currently have particularly dangerous disputes in Taiwan andUkraine. But they find that China and Russia have other ideas andoffer an alternative authoritarian model of global governance thatappeals to many countries.
