  • Resumen
    • El sabor de la tierruca (1882) is Pereda's first regional novel. In his previous ideological works, the author had written that the threat to the ancestral system was political. It originated on the liberal policies coming from the nation's capital. In his first regional novel he claims otherwise, for he sees a much insidious threat growing within the system: the absenteeism of the ruling class of hidalgos. Attracted by the comforts of urban life, the hidalgos abandoned rural towns leaving their communities without political leadership and without spiritual guidance. El sabor de la tierruca tells the story of the return of the good hidalgo to the native land. In this novel Pereda offers a story that deals with time and with the survival of the community kept together under the guidance of a leader who has accepted his historical commitment to preserve an ancestral form of life.
