El presente artículo busca reseguir la trayectoria historiográfica de uno de los aspectos más olvidados en los estudios sobre la incidencia de la Gran Guerra en la España neutral de 1914-1918: la participación de un contingente de voluntarios que sirvió en las filas de la Legión Extranjera francesa. Luego de indagar en las diferentes contribuciones que conforman el estado de la cuestión sobre el objeto de estudio, el artículo propone una serie de vías de desarrollo que permitan superar las limitaciones de los estudios existentes, muy focalizados hasta ahora en la relación entre el voluntariado y la estrategia internacional del nacionalismo catalán.

This article seeks to trace the historiographical trajectory of one of the most forgotten aspects in studies on the impact of the Great War in neutral Spain between 1914 and 1918: the participation of a contingent of volunteers who served in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion. After exploring various contributions that represent the state of the art in relation to the subject under study, I propose a series of paths for further development that would overcome the limitations of existing studies, which to date have primarily focused on the relationship between volunteers and the international strategy of Catalan nationalism.
