    San Miguel de Excelsis o de Aralar es uno de los santuarios de referencia en la historia y en la piedad popular de Navarra. El presente artículo se centra en la imagen titular del santuario o, más exactamente, en la iconografía en ella materializada: san Miguel viste aquí los ornamentos litúrgicos y ostenta además los atributos guerreros -casco y coraza-, pero lo más peculiar de esta tipología es que no esgrime armas humanas, sino que, con los brazos en alto, sostiene sobre su cabeza la cruz. Rastrear las fuentes de inspiración de tan singular modo de representar al arcángel e intentar vislumbrar el camino por el que arraigó en tierras navarras constituye la intención del autor.

    San Miguel de Excelsis or Aralar is one of the main sanctuaries in the history and popular faith of Navarra. This article focuses on the titular image of the sanctuary or, more precisely, on the iconography within it: Saint Michael wears here the liturgical ornaments and also shows his warrior attributes –helmet and breastplate–, but the most interesting thing about this representation is that he does not wield human weapons, instead, with his arms raised, he holds the cross above his head. The author’s intention is to trace the sources of inspiration for such a unique way of representing the archangel whilst highlighting the path by which he took root in Navarre.

    Excelsisko San Migel edo Aralarko San Migel Nafarroako historian eta herri jaieran garrantzi berezia duen santutegia dugu. Artikulu honek santutegiari izena ematen dion irudia du aztergai edo, zehazkiago, irudian gauzatzen den ikonografia. Hemen san Migel apaindura liturgikoak jantzita ageri da eta, era berean, guda ikurrak ere (kaskoa eta bular-oskola, alegia) agertzen ditu, baina ezaugarririk aipagarriena tipologia honetan armarik eza da: besoak gora jasota, buru gainean gurutzeari eusten dio. Ikonografia honen jatorria arakatzea eta nafar lurraldean errotzeko jarraitu zuen bidea begiztatzea da ondoko lanaren helburua.
