Los fármacos neutralizantes se conocen como antiácidos y son de carácter básico. En el interior del estómago, reaccionan con el ácido clorhídrico y lo neutralizan. Al disminuir la acidez del jugo gástrico no sólo se evita el efecto directo del ácido clorhídrico sobre la mucosa, sino también el efecto proteolítico de la pepsina, ya que éste disminuye cuando el pH gástrico es alcalino.

Neutralizing drugs are known as antacids and are basic in nature. Inside the stomach, they react with hydrochloric acid and neutralize it. By reducing the acidity of the gastric juice, not only the direct effect of hydrochloric acid on the mucosa is avoided, but also the proteolytic effect of pepsin, which decreases when the gastric pH is alkaline.
