La distrofia simpática refleja es un síndrome, cuya etiología aún demasiado ambigua, plantea un gran desafío en el campo sanitario por su dificultad de diagnóstico, sustentada fundamentalmente en la clínica del paciente, se apoya en pruebas de imagen, pruebas de laboratorio y estudios neurofisiológicos que ayudan a definir el síndrome o a descartar por hallazgos compatibles con otras patologías.
Se caracteriza por un dolor regional severo y excesivo de difícil control analgésico.
Actualmente la piedra angular de este síndrome es el diagnóstico precoz, enfocado al tratamiento temprano evitando así futuras discapacidades físicas y psicológicas en los pacientes que lo sufren.
