La enfermedad de Crohn es una patología crónica inflamatoria del intestino, que afecta progresivamente a todas sus capas, pudiendo desarrollarse en cualquier tramo del tubo digestivo. Intercala brotes con periodos de inactividad y las áreas más afectadas son el intestino delgado (íleon distal), la porción ascendente del colon, el ciego y el área perianal.
La edad de diagnóstico suele ser temprana ya que suele manifestarse entre los 20 y los 40 años en la mayoría de los casos. Pese a no ser hereditaria, parece existir una cierta predisposición genética insuficiente individualmente para el desarrollo de la enfermedad. La causa concreta que lo desencadena sigue siendo desconocida a día de hoy.
Es un reto a nivel de salud pública debido a su alta cronicidad, su elevada incidencia, y las complicaciones que desencadena.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory pathology of the intestine, which progressively affects all its layers, and can develop in any section of the digestive tract. It alternates outbreaks with periods of inactivity and the most affected areas are the small intestine (distal ileum), the ascending portion of the colon, the cecum and the perianal area.
The age of diagnosis is usually early since it usually manifests itself between 20 and 40 years in most cases. Despite not being hereditary, there seems to be a certain insufficient genetic predisposition individually for the development of the disease. The specific cause that triggers it remains unknown to this day.
It is a public health challenge due to its high chronicity, its high incidence, and the complications it triggers.
