The present paper deals with the prepositional alternation of the Spanish markers "en" and "sobre" in connection with the lexeme "mesa". On the basis of a corpus study, it is shown that although the two expressions share a wide range of uses in context, they convey different nuances of spatiality: in the situations described by the phrase "sobre la mesa", the table is conceptualized as a support while the expression "en la mesa" prompts for a relation more abstract where the routinization and entrenchment plays an essential role.
