The identification and differential diagnosis of respiratory disease requires knowledge of the associated signs and symptoms. A patient's comprehensive medical history must be taken, which should list the presence or absence of symptoms such as cough, expectoration, dyspnea, chest pain, or hemoptysis, among others. The physical examination must be conducted according to the established order of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation and should not only focus on the thorax. Obtaining all this information will serve to guide the patient's diagnosis and request additional tests that better establish the disease and its prognosis, both through imaging tests and respiratory system function tests.
