La escasa resistencia ofrecida por el régimen del Trienio Constitucional frente a la invasión francesa de 1823 sigue siendo una cuestión abierta para la historiografía. Las respuestas tradicionales han insistido en la traición de los generales liberales y el sistema de suministros implementado por los ocupantes. Sin embargo, en muchas zonas del país se produjeron episodios de violencia antiliberal que nos obligan a replantear la cuestión del arraigo social del constitucionalismo. El fin del Trienio no solo vino de la mano de la invasión exterior y la división interna, sino también de la emergencia de una contrarrevolución popular que explica el carácter virulento de la restauración absolutista.

The reasons why the constitutional regime only put up a weak resistance to the French invasion of 1823 remain an open question within the historical literature. Historians have traditionally pointed to the treason of the liberal generals and the capacity of the occupiers to efficiently supply their troops. However, violent anti-liberal outbursts spread over many regions of the country. This raises the question of the level of popular support for the Constitution. The end of the Constitutional Triennium was not only the result of foreign invasion and internal division, but also of the emergence of a popular counterrevolution that explains the violent character of the absolutist restoration.
