La binave de Torres-Quevedo, precursora de los modernos catamaranes

    Entre los temas navales cuya historia completa aún no ha sido escrita se encuentra el del origen y evolución de los barcos multicasco en general. En particular, está pendiente escribir la historia de lo que puede caracterizarse como el «catamarán moderno».

    En este artículo se determina el objeto de esta investigación histórica, el catamarán moderno, y se reconstruyen sus antecedentes. Se concluye que, con la Binave, la embarcación de dos flotadores diseñada por el ingeniero español Leonardo Torres-Quevedo, patentada en Madrid en 1916 y construida y ensayada en Bilbao entre 1917 y 1919, se establecieron los principios que caracterizan hoy este tipo de navíos.

    There are many open issues in Naval History. One of them is the origin and evolution of multihull vessels. In particular, the history of what can be called the “modern catamaran” still has to be written.

    In this paper the historical object “modern catamaran” is determined and its precedents are made explicit. It is shown that the constructive foundations that characterize today this type of vessels were stablished with the “Twin ship”, the boat with two floats that the Spanish inventor Leonardo Torres Quevedo conceived and patented in 1916, and which was constructed and tested in Bilbao between 1917 and 1919.
